As a hard fork of bitcoin Ducatus will work in a very similar way to Bitcoin. Bitcoin is not software, it is a protocol or a set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices and the blockchain. Devices use software which obey these rules to perform various functions including mining, examining the blockchain and execution of transactions. Each operating copy of this software constitutes a 'node' on the network. When examining the blockchain, the wallet software allows the user to see if a counterparty owns coins and, if so, how many they own. If the software detects that the rules are broken in that version of the blockchain then the device automatically looks for an earlier version of the blockchain which conforms to the rules and which can therefore be relied upon to hold accurate information.
Ducatus will use an almost identical set of rules and we will run our own software on e-wallets to establish, build, maintain and manage it's own decentralised blockchain. The Ducatus protocol as well as the software used by devices to work within the Ducatus system will be publicly available and developed under an open source software licence. The first versions of both the Ducatus blockchain and our web-wallet software will be released later this year.
